This hospitality checklist provides ideas for preparing the guest room so your company feels welcome and comfortable in your home. Here are some things you can do to help your overnight guests enjoy their stay even more. The little things mean a lot.
  • Wash bedding the day before guests arrive.
Use fabric softener and a dryer sheet to make the sheets smell fresh.
  • Clean and disinfect guest bathroom
Rubbing alcohol and water mixture is a good disinfectant for most bathroom surfaces, and it does not leave an odor.
  • Prepare the guest bathroom for company
Make sure extra toilet paper is easy to locate, a plunger is accessible, and air freshener is available. Display a fresh bar of soap or fill soap dispenser. Place a nice bottle of lotion near the sink and a hair dryer and hairspray in the drawer. Provide fresh towels and include shower gel, shampoo/conditioner, body scrubber or other amenities. For an extra touch, fold the bottom edge of the toilet paper to a point ...a sign that the room is clean and ready for guests.
  • Provide extra blankets in the guest's bedroom.
An electric blanket or heated mattress pad is especially nice when entertaining overnight guests in your home during the winter.
  • Consider putting a few wrapped gourmet chocolates in a small dish on the dresser, or place one or two on their bed pillow.
This is a sweet touch that says, "Welcome."
  • Add a freshness to the room with your decor
Display a bouquet of roses or fresh lavender. Set out a bowl of fresh potpourri, or arrange a group of scented candles on a decorative plate.
Be sure to ask your guests if they are sensitive to any smells.
  • Order a bath towel with the guests name embroidered on it
This is the perfect way to make a guest feel special.
  • Include a basket of extras in the bedroom or bathroom drawer
Typical items a guest may forget to bring: Personal hygiene items, new toothbrush and paste, tweezers, small scissors, first aid, pain medicine, lotion, shampoo and conditioner, blow dryer.
  • Provide extra pillows (both firm and soft)
A pillow with allergen cover is best.
  • Before overnight guests arrive, ask if they sleep best on a hard or soft bed.
A firm bed can be made softer by adding a piece of foam. A soft mattress may become firmer if it is turned over.
  • Place tissue and bottled water on a nightstand, next to the bed.
  • Lighted alarm clock with radio should be easily visible from the bed
Choose a clock that does not make a ticking noise.
  • Provide robe and slippers, if possible.
  • Plug in a nightlight in the bathroom and/or hallway
Your guests may also want a small flashlight if they need to get up during the night.
  • Place a reading lamp next to the bed
  • Set a few different magazines in a nice basket for your guest to read
If guests are from out-of-town, select some books or reading material about places to visit in your area.
  • Put a nice notepad and pen in a bedroom drawer
  • Clean the room thoroughly
Guest rooms tend to get dusty and musty smelling. Use a lint-free cloth and mixture of dish soap and water to wipe down ceiling fan, window sills, mini-blinds, base boards, etc. Look for cobwebs.
